Dog Quote: They never talk about themselves but listen to you while you talk about yourself, and keep up an appearance of being interested in the conversation. ….Jerome K. Jerome One of the first and most important steps in dog training is to get the respect and confidence of your dog. As mentioned in previous newsletters dogs are pack animals, and there always must be a leader of the pack. You need to ensure that your dog understands that you are his or her leader. Once you’ve done that you will have gained the respect and confidence of your dog. Having done this will make dog training a whole lot easier for you and a far more pleasurable experience. More Information: Dog Training Tactics Failure to gain the respect of your dog will result in a disobedient animal, as they will not look to you as the lead dog, and it is only the lead dog that they will look to for direction. While most new puppy owners love to give their animal love and affection, they also need to be aware that leadership and respect are equally important. In fact, I would go as far as to say that leadership and respect are more important, because it is only when you get that from your dog that you can truly enjoy the benefits of having a dog in the family. And the sooner you get your respect and leadership the more enjoyable life will be for both you and your dog, and the sooner and easier it will be to have your dog fully trained. The longer you leave the process of training your dog the more difficult it will become, as habits of old dogs are harder to break. More Information: Dog Training Tactics -
Dog Quote: I went to an exclusive kennel club. It was very exclusive. There was a sign out front: “No Dogs Allowed.” ….Phil Foster Dogs love to dig but this can be a problem if that lovely landscaped yard of yours looks like a minefield from all the holes that your dog has dug. No doubt if you have a dog that likes to dig you have tried all and sundry to get it to stop from smacking it to yelling at it when it starts to dig and you probably still haven’t resolved the problem. Once again, like all methods of dog training, if you can address the reason why the dog is doing something you will be able to eliminate the problem. More Information: Dog Training Tactics There are many different reasons why a dog will dig, from boredom and frustration to the search for a cold place to rest in humid weather. Consider the surroundings that you have made available for your pet and see if there are any areas that need attention. Does your dog need more shelter, or is the current shelter just a little too hot for the climate that you are living in? Is the dog digging to gain your attention and if so you will need to look at earlier lessons on how to give your dog the attention that it is seeking without encouraging it to continue with the behavior that you wish to stop. Maybe your dog needs more toys to play with or more exercise to relieve some of it’s pent up energy. Maybe you will need to fence off parts of your yard where you know your dog prefers to dig. If you have a dog that just prefers to dig for no other reason than the enjoyment of digging you might need to offer it a dedicated area of the yard where it can dig to it’s hearts delight. This might help to keep your dog contented while you are away. There will always be a solution, you just need to look at the circumstances and take the appropriate action.

Dog Quote: Man is an animal that makes bargains; no other animal does this….no dog exchanges bones with another. ….Adam Smith How much food does your dog really need? Along with the general population of people, dogs are also suffering from obesity from eating the wrong food and eating too much food. It is relatively easy to control the amount of food your dog is eating and it is essential that you gauge its weight on a regular basis to ensure that it doesn’t get obese. Dogs can suffer from many different ailments due to obesity including diabetes. There are an increasing number of dogs suffering from this disease and in most cases this could have been avoided through the correct nutrition and monitoring the amount of food the dog has been eating. More Information: Dog Training Tactics Having a dog with diabetes will necessitate the injection of insulin or in some cases taking of pills to assist in the maintenance of the correct sugar levels in their blood. Obviously this involves additional expense and inconvenience and there is also a danger that should the insulin level be incorrect your pet could die. It makes sense then that your dog should only eat what is good for it and in quantities that won’t result in it developing health problems later in life. Working dogs will need more food for the energy that they will expend in the course of the day but a dog that lays around the house all day and doesn’t get any exercise will not need to eat the same portions of food. You should weigh your dog on a regular basis and see whether it is gaining or losing weight and adjust the amount of food it is eating accordingly. More Information: Dog Training Tactics -
Dog Quote: Heaven goes by favor; if it went by merit, you would stay out and your dog would go in. ….Mark Twain Does your dog have worms? There are two types of worms that you are likely to have to contend with in keeping your dog healthy, and they are the round worms and the tapeworms. Round worms are the ones most prevalent in puppies and they generally look like small white pieces of string of about three inches in length. They can grow up to twice this size in a full-grown dog. Round worms live in the small intestine of the dog and can become so concentrated that they will block the passage. They can be passed by the bowel and this can obviously affect other dogs that are in contact with dogs that have round worms. More Information: Dog Training Tactics It only takes a matter of days for the worms to become fully developed and it is easy for them to spread quickly from one dog to another. The speed by which they can breed and multiply has been one of the reasons why many people originally assumed that puppies were always born with round worms although it has since been proven that this is not the case. More often than not the puppies have got the worms from their mother in the confines of their kennel. There are so many different symptoms that can appear when a dog has worms that anything you notice outside of the ordinary behavior of your pet should be addressed by a visit to your vet as a worm infested dog can become a very unhealthy, unhappy dog very fast. Left untreated worms can kill a dog so it is better to be safe than sorry if you suspect your pet might have worms or have been in contact with other dogs that might have worms.

Dog Quote: Ladies and gentlemen are permitted to have friends in the kennel but not in the kitchen. ….George Bernard Shaw Dogs can suffer from similar ailments that we get as we age, including arthritis and pain in the joints. Some breeds of dogs are more prone than others to getting certain ailments and you need to be aware of the possible problems that your particular breed of dog might get as it grows older. By giving your dog a warm place to lie when it sleeps you might be able to ward off arthritic pain. By keeping the body weight down to acceptable levels for dogs that are prone to overeating and weight gain might stop your dog from developing other symptoms that can affect the quality of life. More Information: Dog Training Tactics It is far better to control things that can affect the dogs health during the course of their life than to make them, and you, pay for ill health as they age. According to many dog experts our pets should be living for a lot longer than the current life expectancies that we have come to accept. With good medication we can expect to enjoy more years with our dogs but it is just as easy to add many quality years to their life by ensuring that they get the optimum nutrition and suitable living standards during the course of their life. Most dogs are very hardy but even they will benefit from additional comforts and care. More Information: Dog Training Tactics -
Dog Quote: Life is like a dogsled team. If you ain’t the lead dog, the scenery never changes. ….Lewis Grizzard Toys, Toys, Toys. Dogs are a lot like children. They love toys. They love things to play with. Dogs grow older but they never really do grow up do they? And they will always get enjoyment out of having their own toys to play with. There are so many different varieties of toys on the market for dogs that it can often be quite difficult to know what to buy. All dogs love to chew, and you’ll find that most dogs’ toys are chewable. More Information: Dog Training Tactics Toys are essential if your dog is going to be left on it’s own for extended periods of time as they can become bored quite easily. A good toy can keep a dog amused for hours when they are younger and as they grow older they will have learnt to spend time on their own without fretting or getting into mischief. Many dogs also like to have their own possessions and a good toy is ideal to keep them satisfied. The best places to look at a wide selection of toys for dogs are the online pet stores that have all you could dream of and ready to be delivered to your door overnight. Take a look and see what you think will keep your dog amused. More Information: Dog Training Tactics
