Dog Quote: Ladies and gentlemen are permitted to have friends in the kennel but not in the kitchen. ….George Bernard Shaw Dogs can suffer from similar ailments that we get as we age, including arthritis and pain in the joints. Some breeds of dogs are more prone than others to getting certain ailments and you need to be aware of the possible problems that your particular breed of dog might get as it grows older. By giving your dog a warm place to lie when it sleeps you might be able to ward off arthritic pain. By keeping the body weight down to acceptable levels for dogs that are prone to overeating and weight gain might stop your dog from developing other symptoms that can affect the quality of life. More Information: Dog Training Tactics It is far better to control things that can affect the dogs health during the course of their life than to make them, and you, pay for ill health as they age. According to many dog experts our pets should be living for a lot longer than the current life expectancies that we have come to accept. With good medication we can expect to enjoy more years with our dogs but it is just as easy to add many quality years to their life by ensuring that they get the optimum nutrition and suitable living standards during the course of their life. Most dogs are very hardy but even they will benefit from additional comforts and care. More Information: Dog Training Tactics -
Dog Quote: Properly trained, a man can be dog’s best friend. ….Corey Ford One of the best things you can do for your dog besides regular exercise, good food, water and shelter, is to be aware of any changes that it might exhibit in all aspects of it’s life. Particularly as dogs get older they might seem like they are just not interested in exercise any longer but this might be due to the fact that they are suffering from pain of some form or another. Many older dogs suffer from arthritis and this can be very painful. There are all sorts of remedies that can help your dog from natural remedies to ones that your local vet might prescribe. More Information: Dog Training Tactics Our beloved pets cannot talk to us and they can only hope that we are aware of their conditions by knowing what they are usually like and noticing any behavioral changes. Even if a normally quiet dog starts whining or barking more often they might be trying to give you a signal that something is not quite right in their life. A regular checkup at the Vet is a good solution to ensure that your dog is always in optimal health and that includes their mental state. Older dogs can become depressed because they are no longer getting the required stimulation mentally and a depressed dog will suffer just as a human can do in similar circumstances. If your dog starts to eat more or less food than normal this could be another sign that there is a problem and also if they gain or lose weight they could be suffering from some health problems. Always be aware of their behavior and it will ensure that your dog has a happy and long life.

Dog Quote: Oh, that dog! Ever hear of a German shepherd that bites its nails? Barks with a lisp? You say, “Attack!” And he has one. All he does is piddle. He’s nothing but a fur-covered kidney that barks. ….Phillis Diller Training your dog to not pull on the leash One of the most common problems people have with their dogs is pulling on the leash. There are many reasons why this can occur, and quite often it is nothing more than excitement on the dogs part. If this is the case, allowing the dog a few minutes to simmer down before taking it on his/her walk can often stop it. More Information: Dog Training Tactics Once again, the dogs pack mentality can come to play with the dog assuming leadership over its owner as the leader of the pack. This comes back to the basics of dog training where the dog must be aware of who the master is. Failure to get this basic dog training technique under control can lead to all sorts of problems, particularly if the dog gets off the leash. In the presence of other dogs, and sometimes young children this problem becomes pronounced. One of the basics of dog training is for the owner to establish him or herself as the leader of the pack otherwise no training can be effective. Once this is been established you can start the process of getting your dog to walk calmly beside you with or without a leash. And that process can only start if you are able to get your dog to sit calmly while you put the leash around its neck. That is the very first step of training your dog to walk without pulling in its leash. Once you succeed in that task, you can move on to the next step where you can get your dog to walk beside you without a leash and be assured that he/she won’t run away. And from there you will not be one of those people where the dog is taking them for a walk. More Information: Dog Training Tactics -
Dog Quote: If a dog’s prayers were answered, bones would rain from the sky. ….Old Proverb Clicker training is a technique that is highly successful for training dogs. The trainer uses a simple clicker that can be purchased from most pet stores and the dog is trained to respond to the sound of the clicker. The dog will quickly learn that the sound of the clicker is followed by a reward and they will respond to commands when the clicker is used knowing that a reward is to follow. It is a great technique for home training of dogs as it is a simple technique that the owner can use to get fast results. More Information: Dog Training Tactics Some other dog training techniques can be a little difficult to master and unless the trainer has a good understanding of the training process it can become quite frustrating when the results don’t come as fast as expected. Clicker training generally gets results relatively fast and the owner and the dog can have a lot of fun during the training with both parties getting what they want out of the training sessions. Clicker training leaves the dog with no doubt what it needs to do to get the reward. Clicker training doesn’t involve any forms of punishment if the dog doesn’t do as it is told, because it will know that it will not get the reward. Punishment training can lead to confusion where the dog does not know what it has done wrong and this confusion can lead to an unhappy dog. There is no such problem with Clicker training. It is actually a form of positive reinforcement for the dog and this will help it bond and build a better relationship with it’s owner. Dogs have also been shown to learn a lot faster when positive reinforcement is used rather than any form of punishment. It is much better to let them know when they have done something well rather than bad and this process can also be used to eliminate bad behavior.

Dog Quote: Man is an animal that makes bargains; no other animal does this….no dog exchanges bones with another. ….Adam Smith How much food does your dog really need? Along with the general population of people, dogs are also suffering from obesity from eating the wrong food and eating too much food. It is relatively easy to control the amount of food your dog is eating and it is essential that you gauge its weight on a regular basis to ensure that it doesn’t get obese. Dogs can suffer from many different ailments due to obesity including diabetes. There are an increasing number of dogs suffering from this disease and in most cases this could have been avoided through the correct nutrition and monitoring the amount of food the dog has been eating. More Information: Dog Training Tactics Having a dog with diabetes will necessitate the injection of insulin or in some cases taking of pills to assist in the maintenance of the correct sugar levels in their blood. Obviously this involves additional expense and inconvenience and there is also a danger that should the insulin level be incorrect your pet could die. It makes sense then that your dog should only eat what is good for it and in quantities that won’t result in it developing health problems later in life. Working dogs will need more food for the energy that they will expend in the course of the day but a dog that lays around the house all day and doesn’t get any exercise will not need to eat the same portions of food. You should weigh your dog on a regular basis and see whether it is gaining or losing weight and adjust the amount of food it is eating accordingly. More Information: Dog Training Tactics -
Dog Quote: A dog is the only thing on this earth that loves you more than he loves himself. ….Josh Billings The Command to Come when Called. One of the most basic and important commands that you will need to teach your dog is to come when called. No matter what else happens, if you have taught your dog this command you will always be able to maintain control whether at home or in public. Should your dog ever get off it’s leash or escape from your property you will know that when you call it that it will come back and this certainly makes life a lot easier for the dog owner. More Information: Dog Training Tactics For working dogs, this is a vital skill as a handler needs to know that at any time they can get the dog back beside them and ready for their next command. When you are comfortable that your dog knows the commands of ’stay’ and ‘come’ you no longer have to be as concerned that it needs to be kept on a leash at all times. This allows both the owner and the dog to have a lot more freedom. Generally, this command of ‘come’ is incorporated when teaching the dog to stay, as these two lessons work hand-in-hand with one another. The dog is first taught to stay and then the owner will teach the dog to come, while still on an extended leash. After gaining success in getting the dog to come, while still on a leash, the owner can then teach it to do so without the leash. Obviously for an untrained animal this would be better taught in an enclosed area until the dog has learned to respond to that command.
