Here’s Today’s Joke: Why did the Eskimo call his dog Frost? Because Frost bites. Unless you have no intention of ever being apart from your dog, then it is a wise decision to train it to be happy while you have periods apart. As we have our pets for many years there will generally be times when there is no alternative but to leave your dog alone or with someone else. The sooner they become accustomed to staying on their own as puppies the easier it will be for both you and your dog. It is a lot harder to leave an older dog on it’s own if you have never been apart since it was a puppy. More Information: Dog Training Tactics Dogs can get separation anxiety quite easily as they cannot be told when we will be back if ever and they will assume that you have left them and are not coming back. By training them when they are young they will accept that you will be gone for while and will remain happy knowing that you will be coming back at some time. I know people who have failed to do this and they have the burden of never being able to leave their dog alone with anyone else. This can make certain situations very difficult and I have seen these people take their dog to a wedding and a funeral and having to check constantly throughout proceedings to see that their dog is happy in their vehicle while they are gone for very short periods of time. This is unfair on the animal as there can be times when it is not possible for you to be with your dog, in the case of a hospital emergency as an example. If the dog is trained to accept these times away it won’t be a big deal but a dog who has never been apart from it’s owner could be devastated by this time away. It is in your dogs best interests to get used to time apart so if you haven’t done so already, start a plan to help it cope as soon as possible. More Information: Dog Training Tactics -
Dog Quote: My dog can bark like a Congressman, fetch like an aide, beg like a press secretary, and play dead like a receptionist when the phone rings. ….US Congressman Gerold Solomon Rewarding your dog is probably the single most important aspect of good training. It is a well-known fact that reward training is the fastest way to get a dog to change their behavior and rewards in the form of positive reinforcement are the fastest way to get the desired results. Reward training also makes the whole process more fun for the owner and the dog. It becomes a bit of a game and helps to reduce any boredom and keep both the dog and the owner motivated. More Information: Dog Training Tactics It is also a good idea to finish each training session with a time for play so the dog associates the learning with fun times and is more excited about these sessions in the future. Many people also like to have a little time before the training sessions for fun too, but that really depends on the personality of your dog as some can get overly excited and this can make the training sessions harder to control. It is not often that you will find people promoting the use of ‘reprimand’ training these days as this is quite a dated technique and has been proven to be less effective than the newer positive action training techniques. Dogs will quickly become discouraged by this type of training and they can also get confused when they are unsure what they have been doing wrong. It is far better to focus on more positive actions that are used to replace those areas of the dog’s behavior that are causing problems. There are certain circumstances where the dog is aware of doing something wrong and in these instances where they will know why they are being reprimanded it is certainly suitable to do so, but once they have been reprimanded it is time to move on quickly and get back to the positive aspects of training.
